Because the marriage had been legal and was made illegal through no fault of either spouse, if the unbelieving spouse wishes to remain with the believing spouse, then the marriage is bound as it had been before. If the unbelieving spouse does not wish to remain with the believing spouse, the marriage is voided and both are free to remarry, but the believing spouse is only free to marry another believer.
